Media Release

A 36-year-old Waikoloa man died this morning (March 6) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash on HonokÅ?hau Road in Kailua-Kona.

The victim was identified as David K. Waipa of a Waikoloa address.

Responding to a 12:52 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle and traveling west on HonokÅ?hau Road when he struck the curb on the right side of the road and was thrown from the motorcycle.

The victim was transported by Fire Rescue personnel to Kona Community Hospital, where he died at 1:30 a.m.

The victim was not wearing a helmet.

Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the eighth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with four at this time last year.
