A 56-year-old Kona man died Friday (August 28) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash at the intersection of Route 190 and Kalaoa Road in North Kona.

Responding to a 3:46 p.m. call, Kona patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the victim was walking in a northerly direction on Route 190 on the mauka shoulder of the road when a 58-year-old Kailua-Kona man operating a 1994 Honda four-door sedan and also traveling north drifted onto the shoulder and struck the victim from behind.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 14th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 16 at the same time last year.
