Media Release (update No. 3)

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in providing information about the identity of the driver of an all-purpose vehicle that was involved in a fatal vehicle/pedestrian crash on the Hawai’i Belt Road in Captain Cook on June 10.

Thanks to tips from the public, police recovered the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer, license JGX 345, in Captain Cook on June 12. It is silver or pewter with license plate JGX 345. It may have been operated by a Hispanic man with the nickname “Mijo,” who may frequent the South Kona area.

Police ask that anyone with information about the car’s driver call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is a volunteer program run by ordinary citizens who want to keep their community safe. Crime Stoppers doesn’t record calls or subscribe to caller ID.
