MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Kona police have arrested two suspects for attempted murder after they allegedly ran down a moped rider early Tuesday (July 18, 2000).

Responding to a 12:58 a.m. call, police determined that three moped riders were traveling east on Henry Street when a pickup truck with two occupants drove past them, made a U-turn and came back toward them going the wrong way. The truck then struck one of the mopeds head-on, critically injuring the 23-year-old rider.

The truck then sped away from the scene. It was stopped a few minutes later by police officers, who arrested the driver, 20, and his passenger, 21, both males of Kailua-Kona.

The victim was identified as Robert Manuel, of Kailua-Kona. Manuel was taken to the Kona Community Hospital. Later, about 4:30 a.m., he was flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he was reported in critical condition.

Police said the suspects and moped riders apparently had been involved in a previous confrontation.

Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives are holding the two suspects for investigation.
