On Thursday morning, January 12, 2006, at about 11 a.m., Kailua-Kona Fire Rescue units informed Hawaii County Police that they were transporting an unconscious male from Makalawena Beach.

Upon Police arrival, it was determined that a 58 year old male visitor was snorkeling with family members and was caught up in unfamiliar strong offshore current. The victim was brought to shore by Fire Rescue with no apparent signs of life and transported to Kona Community Hospital.

Richard MOULTONG of Firth, Idaho was pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. Police have initiated a Coroners Inquest investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
