APRIL 6, 1999

Kona Juvenile Aid Section detectives charged a 17-year-old San Diego, California, male Monday (April 5, 1999) in connection with a robbery and assault on a 19-year-old tourist Sunday in Kailua-Kona.

At 6:25 a.m. Monday, the juvenile was charged with second-degree robbery and third-degree promotion of a deadly drug. At 1 p.m., he was taken to Family Court, where his case was adjudicated.

Because the defendant is a juvenile and his case was adjudicated in Family Court, police said the outcome of the youth’s case is confidential.

The victim told police he was speaking with a group of local male juveniles. While they were talking, the defendant came up, struck the victim on the back of his head, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched him. The assailant took the victim’s wallet, which contained $180 in cash, during the assault and then fled.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated for cuts and abrasions on his head, face and body.

Kona patrol officers later recovered the victim’s wallet and returned it to him.
