The Kona Stingrays raced by the What 47-29 on Sunday (May 6, 2001) to win the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League’s Girls 14 & Under Basketball Tournament.

In the battle of two undefeated teams for the championship, the Stingrays’ Jessica Hanato poured in 16 points and teammates Sareena Hanato, Haunani Liftee and Jazzmin Awa-Williams tickled the twine for 8 points each. Natasha Ludwig and Lynelle Paranada led the What with 12 and 8 points.

In the game for third place in the HI-PAL tournament, the Paauilo Tigers out-gunned the Island Girls of Hilo 32-20. The Tigers were led by Codey Carpio with 9 points and Shaleigh Gacayan and Alyssa Souza with 8 points each. Amber Spencer led the Island Girls with 7 points.

The tournament was held on May 5-6 at the Boys & Girls Club in Hilo. A total of eight teams from around the Big Island battled in two pools of four teams to reach the semi-final and championship games.

Other teams participating in the tournament were Waimea, HI-PAL Rush, And What and Junior Seasiders.

Members of the champion Kona Stingrays were the Hanatos, Liftee, Awa-Williams, Kehau Boshard, Kuuipo Kaupu, Elizabeth Chung-Hoon-Palau, Marianna Alu and Leesa Deniz. The Stingrays were coached by Don and Bobbie Awa.
