The victim was identified as Royden J.F. Kalavi, of a Kailua-Kona address.

Responding to a 2:43 p.m. call, Kona Patrol Officers determined that a 2004 Mazda, four door sedan was traveling east on Kealakehe Parkway when it rear-ended a 1996 Ford Pick-up truck. The victim who was in the bed of the truck was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver of the Mazda, a 19-year old Kailua-Kona man and his 19-year old female passenger were treated and released from the Kona Community Hospital.

The driver of the Ford Pick-up, a 16-year old Kailua-Kona boy was released from the hospital with no injuries. A 15-year old boy who was also in the bed of the pick-up truck was transported to the hospital and was listed in serious condition.

A 15-year old boy who was a front seat passenger in the pick-up truck was treated and released with minor injuries.

The occupants of the Mazda were wearing their seatbelts and the driver of the Ford truck was the only person in that vehicle to be wearing a seatbelt.

Police believe that speed was a factor in this crash

The victim was pronounced dead at 7:36 p.m. at the Kona Community Hospital.
