Media Release

The Hawaii Police Department is warning the public about bogus letters that have been sent to Puna residents claiming the recipients are winners in sweepstakes.

The letters, sent through the U.S. mail, include phony checks and ask the recipients to cash them and return a processing fee. Several different but similar scams have had return addresses from Canada.

Police warn the public not to respond to suspicious requests for money.
