A 47-year-old man died Tuesday, September 26, after crashing his moped in Kona.

The victim as been identified as Scott Fienup of no permanent address.

Responding to an 8:35 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that Fienup was operating a late model Honda moped heading east on Huli Koa Street in the Kohana Iki Industrial area when he struck the back of a parked unoccupied 2005 Dodge pickup truck.

Fire rescue personnel took him to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police believe inattention was a factor in the crash.

This is the 28th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 29 at this time last year.
