North Hilo man dies in car crash 11-05-05

A 22 year old Papaaloa man died Saturday (November 5, 2005) from injuries he sustained in a one vehicle traffic crash on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19), one tenth of a mile south of the 16 mile marker in the North Hilo District.

The victim is identified as Leland W. AMBROSIO, M-22, of Papaaloa.

Responding to a 4:27 a.m. call, North and South Hilo Patrol Officers determined that the victim was operating a 1998 Mazda 4 door sedan, traveling in the north or Hamakua direction, when he crossed the center line, across the Hilo bound lane, and struck an embankment on the mauka side of the road.

The victim was transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:20 a.m.

A passenger in AMBROSIO’S vehicle, a 23 year old male, was also transported to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash. He is currently listed in serious condition.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors at in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a Coroner’s Inquest investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This was the 30th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 36 at the same time last year.
