MEDIA RELEASE (UPDATE)

A 26-year-old man who died Sunday (August 20, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle crash in North Kohala has been identified as Kauhi L. Simao of Waikoloa.

Responding to a 4:14 a.m. call, North Kohala patrol officers determined that Simao was operating a 1997 Dodge pickup truck and was traveling east on Akoni Pule Highway when he crossed the centerline near the 24-mile marker, went over an embankment and dropped about 50 feet into a gulch.

Simao was taken to North Kohala Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:10 a.m.

This is the 25th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 22 at this time last year.
