A North Kohala man was struck on the head with a hard blunt object by an unknown male wearing a ski mask, hood, and dark clothing as the victim was getting out of his truck in the driveway of his residence in Hawi.

The victim, Harold Higa, 54, and his wife, Corinne Higa, 50, owners of Shige Service Station in Hawi, had just returned home Friday evening (December 18, 1999) at about 8:30 p.m. when the attack took place. The suspect came out from the dark, approached the victim from behind, and began hitting him. The victim’s wife, who was in their truck, was not injured.

The suspect fled on foot from the area and is still at large.

The victim was transported by Kohala ambulance to the North Hawaii Hospital and then by air ambulance to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he is listed in serious condition.

The North Kohala police, assisted by Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives, are continuing with the investigation.
