Aloha Exchange Club President Dale Tokuuke presents an ‘Officer of the Month’ award to Officer Darryl Castillo

Media Release

The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai’i recognized Officer Darryl Castillo on Thursday (December 3) as “Officer of the Month” for October.

Castillo was recognized for his quick action in catching three people who had broken into a home while the victims slept.

Castillo was on routine patrol at 1 a.m. on October 11 when he spotted a pillow and sheet lying on a road in front of a house and a then saw a woman picking them up. He stopped to make sure everything was OK and learned that her house had just been burglarized and that another victim was chasing the burglars.

Officer Castillo located two of the suspects, an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, and other officers found the third, a 20-year-old man. The victims’ property was recovered and all three suspects were later charged with burglary.

“These arrests were made possible largely due to the efforts of Officer Castillo and his tenacious desire to help the victims,” said Sergeant Allan Watanabe, who nominated Castillo for the award. “The victims and the community as a whole now have the peace of mind in knowing that these criminals were apprehended.”

As “Officer of the Month,” Castillo is eligible for “Officer of the Year.”

The East Hawaii “Officer of the Month” award is a project of the Aloha Exchange Club of Hilo.
