Media Release

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Officer Marco Segobia as "Officer of the Month" for August in a luncheon ceremony Wednesday (October 6) at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

Segobia was honored for single-handedly capturing a dangerous suspect following a domestic dispute. The suspect had severely beaten, choked, stabbed and reportedly held a gun to the back of a woman’s head while threatening to kill her.

A short time later, Segobia located the suspect’s truck in motion and followed it until it stopped in a vacant lot and the driver got out.

According to Sergeant Daniel Mlakar, who nominated the officer for the honor, Segobia knew the suspect was dangerous and possibly armed. "The officer drew his gun and commanded the man to lie on the ground face down Mlakar wrote in nomination papers. "Segobia cautiously moved closer, made positive identification and handcuffed the suspect."

The suspect was charged with five counts of abuse of a household member, four counts of terroristic threatening, three counts of assault, one count of kidnapping and one count of unlawful imprisonment.

As "Officer of the Month," Segobia is eligible to become "Officer of the Year."

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee is an organization that encourages community involvement in aiding and supporting police in West Hawai’i.
