Media Release

A 67-year-old Pahala man died Wednesday (February 6) from injuries he sustained in an ATV crash on Maia Camp Road above Pahala.

The victim was identified as Roy K. Okinishi of a Pahala address.

Responding to a 5:18 p.m. call, Ka’u patrol officers determined that Okinishi was operating a Honda all-terrain vehicle and traveling south on Maia Camp Road when he lost control and ran off the left side of the road.

He was not wearing a helmet.

Okinishi was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:04 p.m.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Because this crash occurred on a private road, it is not counted toward the island’s official traffic fatality count.
