MEDIA RELEASE

In response to public complaints, Big Island police are continuing their crackdown on illegal oversized vehicles.

Sergeant Randy K. Apele of the Traffic Services Section said altering vehicles to make them higher off the ground make them out of balance, harder to control and present a danger to the drivers, their passengers and other vehicles on the road.

Section 291-35.1 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes regulates maximum bumper heights of bumpers according to the vehicles’ weight.

Under the statute, the maximum heights, measured from a level surface to the highest point on the bottom of the bumper, are:

The state transportation or county engineer may issue written permits exempting certain vehicles, particularly farm equipment, from the regulation.

Violators are subject to a fine of up to $600.
