MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police arrested and charged a 14-year-old Hawaiian Beaches male Saturday (September 29, 2001) with the murder and sexual assault Thurday of a 6-year-old girl.

At 10:45 p.m., Hilo Criminal Investigation Detectives charged the youth with second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree sexual assault. The suspect was turned over to the family court for secure detention.

Police said they could not identify the suspect because of state law, which requires keeping the names of juveniles confidential.

On Thursday, the body of Kauilani Tadeo was found in a vacant house in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision.

The girl had been reported missing from her Hawaiian Beaches home at 6:03 p.m. Police and fire rescue searchers found her body at 8:30 p.m. in the vacant house on Opihi Street in the same neighborhood in which the victim lived.

The results of an autopsy conducted Friday determined that the girl had died as the result of blunt force trauma to the head.
