Police identify North Kohala drowning victim 08-01-05

MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a male visitor from Wisconsin who apparently drowned Saturday (July 30, 2005) in waters off Pololu Valley in North Kohala.

The victim was identified as Frederick Wideman, 52 (cq), of Soldier’s Grove, Wisconsin.

About 11 a.m., the victim was reported to have been overcome by waves and a strong current.

Bystanders helped get the victim to shore and administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation until fire rescue personnel arrived.

The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:19 p.m.

Police have classified the incident as a coroner’s request and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
