MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo police are seeking the public’s help in locating an unknown male who tried to rob the Wiki Wiki Mart on Wednesday night (May 16, 2001).

Responding to a 10:27 p.m. call, police learned that a male 17 to 19 years old, entered the store, held his left hand under his shirt and indicated he had a gun and demanded money. When the two store clerks failed to respond to him, the suspect left, got into a white or light gray two-door sedan and left heading toward the downtown Hilo direction. No money was taken, and no injuries were reported in the robbery attempt.

The suspect is described as being about 5-feet-7 inches in height, weighing about 119 pounds with a thin build, being dark-complexioned and wearing a light-colored long-sleeved T-shirt, blue jeans and gray ski cap and had a blue bandana covering his face. The suspect was described as having a heavy local accent.

Anyone with information about the incident or about the suspect is asked to call police at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls. The identity of callers is kept strictly confidential.
