MEDIA RELEASE

As the result of a three-month undercover operation, the Hawaii County Police Department is seeking indictments against 21 persons allegedly involved in cockfighting.

The Hilo Vice Section and Criminal Intelligence Unit have completed the investigation of 211 cases involving illegal cockfighting.

Lieutenant Henry Tavares of the Hilo Vice Section said Tuesday (August 15, 2000) that police are referring the results of the investigations to the County Prosecutor’s Office for grand jury indictments against the 21 suspects.

The investigations involved six separate cockfights held last year at various places around the Big Island.

None of the suspects, identified by undercover police officers who attended the cockfights, has been charged yet, Tavares said.
