Police Seek Witnesses to Hilo Assault, Robbery 02-05-02

Police are seeking witnesses to an assault and robbery that occurred Saturday (February 2, 2002) in the vicinity of the Puainako Center in Hilo.

The robbery occurred about 6:50 p.m. when a 24-year-old male near the Baskins-Robbins store at the shopping center was approached and assaulted by two other males, who took the victim’s cell phone, jewelry and a wallet containing an undisclosed amount of cash.

During the robbery, the assault spilled out into the intersection of Kahaopea Street and Kanoelehua Avenue.

Two suspects were arrested in the case, but were later released without being charged.

Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the assault to call Detective Greg Esteban of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2384 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
