MEDIA RELEASE

Police are reminding Big Island motorists to drive safely to ensure a safe Thanksgiving holiday.

Acting Lieutenant Randy Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section, said police will increase the number of checkpoints over Thanksgiving and the weekend to check for drunk drivers and seat belt usage.

“Let’s all cooperate to make this holiday season, with its heavier than usual traffic, a safe one by driving safely and using our seatbelts,” Apele said.

He also noted that traffic in Hilo will heavier than usual for this holiday season because a section of Komohana Street, a major thoroughfare, has been closed to traffic because of damage due to heavy rains early this month.
