On Sunday (October 5) at 9:07 a.m., Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a fight and gunshots. They found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m. He was identified as Cameron Mauga of Hilo.
Not long after learning of the incident, police arrested Desmond Lewi in connection with the shooting a short distance away on Kauhane Street in Keaukaha. The victim and suspect were acquaintances.
Lewi was charged with second degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and two additional firearm offenses. He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $1,000,000 bail pending his initial court appearance in South Hilo District Court tomorrow afternoon.
An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death of the victim will be performed Tuesday morning (October 7).
Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in locating David Lewi, the 30-year-old brother of the suspect, as he is believed to possess information relative to this investigation. He is described as being approximately 5-foot-6, 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
