Police officers from the Hilo Vice Section, Criminal Investigation Unit, Hilo Community Policing Team and Puna Patrol raided a cockfight Friday (April 16, 1999) in Kurtistown, Puna, and arrested two men.

Executing a search warrant at 7:40 p.m. at Iwasaki Camp, the officers arrested Renwick Galariada, 40, and Jason Kim, 29, both of Kurtistown, for eight counts of cruelty to animals, one count of attempted cruelty to animals and nine counts of gambling.

They also recovered eight injured or dead gamecocks and one live gamecock with a gaff still attached to its leg.

The two suspects were released pending further investigation.

The raid was part of the police department’s ongoing activities against cockfighting and organized gambling on the Big Island.

Lieutenant Henry Tavares, head of the Hilo Vice Section, thanked the public for its continuing support in the fight against cockfighting and said anyone with information about cockfighting or other illegal gambling activities should call Hilo Vice at 961-2258 or Kona Vice at 326-4240.
