MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo Vice Section officers raided a cockfight Saturday (June 19, 1999) on Pohaku Drive in the Orchidland subdivision of Puna.

Executing a search warrant at 3:44 p.m., officers arrested Dexter Pacheco Sr., 45 of Orchidland; Robin Chai, 40, of Kurtistown; Anthony Maldonado, 47, and Stacy Pacheco, 27, both of Hilo; and Omar Berdon, 28, and Pearl Berdon, 30, both of Keaau. They were arrested for cruelty to animals and various related offenses.

Police also recovered 33 injured or dead gamecocks and three marijuana plants.

The suspects were released and police are continuing their investigation to identify additional responsible persons.

Detective Marshall Kanehailua said the raid was part of the Police Department’s ongoing activities against cockfighting and organized gambling on the Big Island.
