MEDIA RELEASE

A 35-year-old Puna woman died Thursday afternoon (July 20, 2000) following a two-car collision that occurred on Volcano Highway (Route 11) in Mountain View, Puna.

The victim was identified as Shawn Kaikala, of a Mountain View address.

Responding to a 10:38 a.m. call, police officers determined that a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Joni Scott, 37, also of Mountain View, was heading north on the highway when she lost control of the vehicle on wet roads near the 12-mile marker. The Blazer crossed the centerline and collided with Kaikala’s 1986 Honda Accord sedan heading in the opposite direction. Scott’s Blazer then rolled over the Honda and landed on its side on the shoulder of the road.

Kaikala was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m. Scott, the only occupant of her car, and Fredrine Caminos, 35, a passenger in Kaikala’s car, were also taken to the Hilo hospital, where they confined in stable condition.

Police said it appears that Kaikala and Caminos were not wearing their seatbelts, but Scott was wearing hers.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation.

Kaikala’s death was the 23rd traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 16 during the same period last year.
