Police have identified the burned remains of a male found in the remote Waawaa subdivision this past Sunday (February 25, 2007) as that of 21 year-old Tyrone Torres of Puna. Identification was made with the assistance of a forensic odontologist.

Puna patrol officers investigating a reported shooting, located the burned remains of the victim within a vehicle which has been set on fire near the shoreline in the Waawaa area of lower Puna. Due to the condition of the body, police were unable to immediately identify the victim.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Section as part of their investigation were searching for the juvenile suspected in the killing when they received information from a member of the suspect’s family of his location. He was taken into custody without incident.

Custody of the juvenile was relinquished to Deputy Sheriffs at the request of the Family Court Probations personnel.
