An unidentified man was killed Friday (May 10) from injuries he received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash on Highway 11 in the area of the 20-mile marker in Glenwood.

Responding to a 7:29 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that a 49-year-old Hilo man was operating a 1998 Peterbuilt water truck and traveling north on Highway 11 when he struck a man who was in the northbound lane of the roadway.

Prior to this call, officers were already en route to the same area in response to a report of a man running on the roadway.

Fire Rescue personnel took the man to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:57 p.m.

The driver of the water truck and his 48-year-old wife were not injured.

Police do not suspect alcohol, drugs or speed with respect to the driver.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with  information about this crash is asked to call Officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119.

This is the 13th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 14 at this time last year.
