A 1-year-old girl from Pāhoa was injured Thursday (February 11) after being run over by a vehicle in a driveway of a residence in the Hawaiian Shores subdivision in the Puna District.

Responding to a 6:29 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that a 35-year-old Keaau man was operating a 1995 Toyota multi-purpose vehicle and was reversing from the driveway when he ran over the child with the vehicle’s left rear tire.

The child was transported by Fire Rescue personnel to the Hilo Medical Center.

The child was listed in critical condition with internal injuries and was flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

The driver of the vehicle, who was visiting the residence, was arrested for Negligent Injury, Accidents Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury, No Operator’s License and No-No Fault Insurance.

After conferring with the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Office, the driver was released pending further investigation.
