A Hilo man was arrested Monday night for attempted murder after allegedly slashing another man’s throat at a Hawaiian Ocean View Estates home in Ka’u.

The suspect, identified as Charles Myron “Chucky” Freitas, 61, is being held in the Kona police cellblock, and Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives are continuing an investigation.

The victim, identified as Carl Whittaker, 46, of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, was listed in stable condition at the Kona Community Hospital after undergoing surgery.

An investigation indicates that the two had been drinking at a third man’s residence in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates when the incident occurred about 8:25 p.m. The two men reportedly had a previous disagreement.

After responding to an emergency call, fire rescue personnel flew the victim to the Kona hospital, and Ka’u patrol officers arrested Freitas.
