MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police charged a 39-year-old Hilo man Thursday (July 31, 2003) with attempted murder and other offenses steming from an incident Tuesday in which he allegedly shot at four persons.

At 11:10 a.m., Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged Damian Alfred Fontes, of a Mauna Iho Place address, with four counts of attempted murder, one count of first-degree burglary, five counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and a number of lesser firearms offenses. Fontes is being held without bail in the Hilo police cellblock.

Responding to a 3:15 p.m. call Tuesday, South Hilo patrol officers arrested Fontes after he allegedly threatened to shoot four persons — three males and a female — at a residence next door. The suspect allegedly fired at them with a handgun outside, then chased them inside the house and continued firing at them.

No one was injured in the incident, however, and police recovered a .32-caliber revolver when they arrested the suspect.
