Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are investigating the third pipe bomb explosion in two weeks in Hilo.

The latest explosion occurred Tuesday night (January 11, 2000) in the parking lot of Ken’s Pancake House on Kamehameha Avenue.

A restaurant employee called police at 10:43 p.m. to report hearing a loud explosion coming from the parking lot.

Tuesday’s explosion was the third within two weeks caused by pipe bombs, but detectives said they don’t know whether the three explosions are related.

And shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 1999, an explosion caused an undetermined amount of damage to a vehicle parked on Hoku Street.
