Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives Saturday (July 28, 2001) charged two men with a robbery that occurred the previous evening in Hilo.

At 6 p.m., detectives charged with second-degree robbery Marcus Anthony Winkler Jr., 20, of Milolii, South Kona, and Keo Samuel Janto, 18, of a Popolo Street address, Hilo. The two are being held in the Hilo police cellblock — Janto in lieu of $20,000 bail and Winkler in lieu of $5,000.

Responding to a 5:45 p.m. call on Friday, South Hilo Patrol officers learned that a 16-year-old student from Japan was robbed at 139 Kapiolani Street by two local males, who took his shoulder bag and its contents valued at $170.

During an altercation with the suspects, the victim sustained scratches and abrasions to his arms and legs and a possible sprained ankle. He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Later that night, at 10:40 p.m., South Hilo Patrol officers arrested Winkler and Janto.
