Two Promoted to District Commander Positions 06-18-01

The Hawaii County Police Department has promoted two lieutenants to the rank of captain to fill the vacant positions of commander in the North and South Kohala Districts.

They are Lieutenant Robert K. Kaaua, who will take over as commander of the South Kohala District, and Lieutenant Larry R. Weber, who will lead the North Kohala District.

Kaaua, a 22-year veteran with the department, previously headed the Traffic Services Section. He began his police career in July 1979 as a patrolman, and in 1985, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and assigned to the Ka’u District. In 1987, Kaaua was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and worked as a detective sergeant in both the Hilo Vice and Criminal Investigations Sections. In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and placed in charge of the Traffic Service Section.

Weber, a 20-year veteran, previously head of the Hilo Juvenile Aid Section, began his career in December 1980 as a patrolman, and in 1986, he was promoted to the rank of detective sergeant assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division, where he, too, worked in both the Hilo Vice and Criminal Investigations Sections. In December 1996, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant with the South Hilo Patrol District, and in March 1999, he took over the Hilo Juvenile Aid Section.
