MEDIA RELEASE

Police report they have been receiving numerous complaints over the past few weeks about damaged or destroyed mail and newspaper boxes in South Hilo.

Police suspect that the vandals may be using baseball bats or something similar to damage and destroy mail and newspaper boxes located alongside the roadway. Most of the incidents have been occurring in the late evening or early morning hours, officers said.

They are urging residents to call the police non-emergency number, 935-3311, as soon as they hear or see something suspicious so that police can respond in a timely manner.

Residents are also urged to get a description, if possible, of the vehicles used in the vandalism.

To learn ways to prevent similar incidents in the future, residents are urged to contact the community police officer assigned to their neighborhood or call the East Hawaii community policing number at 961-2350.
