MEDIA RELEASE

A couple visiting from Canada was robbed Friday (July 18, 2003) on the Kapa’a County Beach Park Road in North Kohala.

North Kohala patrol officers determined that the husband and wife were driving down the road about 10:50 a.m. when they saw the male suspect standing beside a car parked in the opposite direction they were traveling. The suspect waved them down, and thinking that he may have car trouble, the couple pulled over.

The suspect then pulled a handgun from the car, demanded money, grabbed a handbag with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry, took the keys to the couple’s rental car and drove off.

After the robbery, the couple caught a ride to the Kapa’au police station, where they reported the incident to police.

The suspect was described as a local male in his mid-30s, being 5-foot-10 in height, weighing 160 to 170 pounds with a medium build, having a tan to dark complexion and having brown eyes and unknown-colored hair. He also wore a light-colored T-shirt, light-colored pants, possibly beige, and a faded red bandanna on his head. They described him as looking clean-cut and having a mustache.

The suspect’s vehicle was described as an older model grayish-beige, full-sized sedan of an unknown model with a faded and scratched paint job.

Anyone with information about the robbery or the identity of the robber is asked to call the Detective Zachary N. Houchin of the Kona Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4232 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
