Media Release

An unidentified man was killed Wednesday (January 12) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Lua Kula Street in Waikoloa Village in the South Kohala District.

Responding to an 11:34 p.m. call, South Kohala patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2006 Toyota pickup truck and traveling north on Lua Kula Street when he ran off the right side of the road, struck a light post and struck a tree.

The victim was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by Fire Department personnel. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.

This is the third traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with three at this time last year.
