Big Island police are investigating a homicide in Waikoloa.

Responding to a 4:07 p.m. report of a shooting in the employees’ parking lot at the Kings’ Shops on Waikoloa Beach Drive, South Kohala police determined that a 38-year-old man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds resulting in his death.

The victim’s name is being withheld until his family is notified.

Police arrested Lito Mateo, 53, of Waikoloa on suspicion of second-degree murder but have not charged him. He is being held at the Kealakehe police station while the investigation continues.

Detectives assigned to the Area II Criminal Investigations Division are at the scene investigating the shooting.
