Big Island police recovered a decomposed body Wednesday (June 2, 1999) near the beach in Waipio Valley, Hamakua District.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives have initiated an investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death and identity of the body. The case has been classified as a coroner’s inquest.

At 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Hamakua patrol officers responded to a report that a possible body had been discovered in the isolated valley. And at 4 p.m., Hamakua police found the partially buried body near Waipio’s black sand beach.

Hilo CIS detectives excavated the body from the valley at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

It could not be immediately determined whether the body was that of a man or a woman.
