MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged a 50-year-old woman Friday evening (October 19, 2001) in the shooting death of her ex-husband.

The suspect, Genesis Eleakala Kauhi, of a Baker Street address, was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. She is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Kauhi was arrested Thursday after police responded to a report of a shooting incident in the Keaukaha residential area.

Responding to a 5:14 a.m. call, Hilo police found the victim, Gaylon Baldado, 51, with a gunshot wound in his left abdomen. Rescue personnel treated the victim for his wound and took him to the Hilo Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. The victim later died.

Police learned that after being shot, the victim had gone to a neighbor’s house, told the occupants he was shot and asked them to call an ambulance.
