Media Release

A 20-year-old Kamuela man died following a two-vehicle collision one-half mile south of the 3-mile marker on Māmālahoa Highway (Route 190), in the early evening hours of Saturday (October 3) in Kamuela.

He has been identified as Jourdan Evangelista.

Responding to a 7:43 p.m. call, police determined that Evangelista was a front seat passenger in a green 1999 Volkswagen Jetta that had been traveling north on Māmālahoa Highway (Route 190) when the vehicle, upon negotiating a curve  in the road, lost control due to wet roadway conditions.  This caused the Jetta to veer into the oncoming southbound lane of travel, where it was involved in a broadside collision with a gold 2014 Dodge Caravan operated by a 55-year-old Waikoloa woman.

All occupants of vehicles involved in the crash were taken to North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital for treatment, where Evangelista was officially pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m.  An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation and is asking for anyone who witnessed the crash to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646, extension 229. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.

This is the 16th fatality this year compared with nine at this time last year.
