Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a single-vehicle traffic collision involving a police subsidized vehicle operated by an off-duty police officer that occurred early Sunday morning in Hilo.
Just after 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2021, police responded to a one car traffic crash at the intersection of Kekuanaoa Street and Kilauea Avenue.
Police determined that a 2015 Dodge two-door sedan traveling on Kekuanaoa Street lost control, failing to negotiate a right turn onto Kilauea Avenue. The vehicle then struck a traffic light pole and hedges on the shoulder of Kilauea Ave.
The involved vehicle was determined to be police subsidized vehicle that was being operated by an off-duty police officer at the time. The officer is a 12-year veteran and was not injured in the incident.
The investigation caused a temporary road closure Sunday afternoon for about three-hours as police combed the traffic scene.
Police are still investigating to determine appropriate criminal charges and the Office of Professional Standards has initiated an administrative investigation into the matter.
All criminal charges in the incident are expected to be sent to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for an examination and potential charging.
The police department’s administrative investigation, which is separate from the criminal investigation, will result in disciplinary action should there be any policy or procedure violations.
The incident is extremely concerning and is being examined carefully. These incidents take time to piece together and are critical to the outcome. Police are asking for the public’s assistance in ascertaining additional information in the incident that can assist.
