The Hawaii County Police Department welcomed 11 new police officers into its ranks Friday (November 15, 2002).

The 11 were members of the 61st Police Recruit Class, who graduated during luncheon ceremonies held at the Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo. The new officers recently completed 25 weeks of training.

They will be assigned to veteran police officers around the island and will undergo another three and a half months of field training. After that, they will be assigned initially to cellblocks in East and West Hawaii.

Friday’s graduates were: Thelia N. Alvarez, Edwin A. Buyten, Calvin D. Delaries Jr., William H. Derr, Bryan G.K. Ellis, Richard A. Itliong, Dale E. Ku, Daniel J. Nietling, Mark T. Spain, Jason M.K. Tominaga and Dale K. Viloria.

Officers of the recruit class were Buyten, president; Alvarez, vice president; and Nietling, secretary-treasurer.

Nietling won the academic and physical fitness awards; Ellis earned the firearm award; and Derr was recognized for keeping the best notebook.

Trainers for the graduating recruits were Sergeant Jay N. Enanoria and Officers Wayne Hisashima and Jason Shinoda.

Training for the 62nd Recruit Class is scheduled to begin in January 2003.
