MEDIA RELEASE (UPDATE)

A 13-year-old Ka’u boy died Thursday (August 17, 2006) from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle crash in the Discovery Harbour subdivision in Ka’u.

The victim was identified as Kamanuwai Waiwaiole of Mark Twain Estates. He was not wearing a helmet.

Responding to an 8:15 a.m. report of a crash, Ka’u patrol officers determined that three ATVs were traveling at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Kahiki Street and Wakea Avenue when the victim rear-ended one of the other ATVs as it was slowing down. The operator of the other ATV, a 12-year-old Discovery Harbour boy, was not injured.

Fire Rescue personnel took the victim to Ka’u Hospital, where he died at 10:00 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 24th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 21 at this time last year.
