During the week of May 5-11, 2003, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 301 DUI arrests, compared to 284 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been 807 major accidents so far this year, compared to 784 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 10 fatalities so far this year, compared to 14 for the same period last year, a decrease 29 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
