During the week of January 17, 2011, through January 23, 2011, Big Island police arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 88 DUI arrests compared with 114 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 83 major accidents so far this year compared with 70 during the same period last year, an increase of of 18.6 percent.

So far this year, there were three traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with five fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 40 percent.

So far, the three fatalities this year were not related to drugs only (0), alcohol only (0) or a combination of both (0 of the 3).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
