Media Release

A 24-year-old Pāpa’ikou man died Monday (November 15) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on the Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19), south of the Honomū Transfer Station road at the 14-mile marker on Sunday (November 14).

The victim was identified as Tylor K. Souza of a Pāpa’ikou address.

Responding to a 8:24 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the victim was operating a 1985 Toyota pickup truck and traveling south on Hawai’i Belt Road when he lost control, crossed the centerline, struck guardrails on the makai and mauka shoulders of the road and overturned.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Fire Rescue personnel took the victim to Hilo Medical Center.

He died at 3 a.m.

Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask that anyone with information about this case call Officer Andres Fojas at 961-8889.

This is the 24th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 20 at this time last year.
