Media Release

A 55-year-old woman from Ocean View died Sunday (June 20) from injuries she sustained in a two-vehicle collision on Kamā‘oa Road, .7 miles east of South Point Road in the area of Discovery Harbour.

The victim was identified as Marena L. Bohol.

Responding to a 6:44 p.m. call, Ka’u patrol officers determined that a 22-year-old woman from Nā’ālehu was operating a 2003 Ford pickup truck and traveling east on Kamā‘oa Road when she crossed the centerline and collided with Bohol, who was operating a 1994 Toyota two-door sedan and traveling west.

The victim was dead at the scene and was officially pronounced dead at midnight at Kona Community Hospital.

Fire Department personnel took the driver of the Ford truck and her passenger, a 55-year-old woman from Nā’ālehu, to Kona Community Hospital. It is unknown what their conditions are at this time.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash but speed was a factor.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask that anyone with information about this crash call Officer Larry Flowers at 326-4646, extension 229.

This is the 18th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 11 at this time last year.
