Media Release

A 69-year-old Kealakekua man died yesterday (November 6) from injuries he sustained after being struck by a vehicle at a residence in Captain Cook.

The victim was identified as Robert J. Flores, of a Kealakekua address.

Responding to an 11:40 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that a 75-year-old Captain Cook man was operating a 1996 Mazda pick-up truck and was reversing towards a residence which he and the victim were repairing.

The victim was reportedly guiding the driver of the truck to the residence to off load supplies.  About 5 feet from the residence, the victim motioned for the driver to stop.  The driver apparently hit the accelerator and struck the victim, pinning him between the truck and the residence.

The victim was transported to the Kona Community Hospital by Fire Rescue personnel where he later died at 5:50 p.m.

Police do not suspect alcohol, drugs or speed in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Being that this crash occurred on private property, the death is not counted towards the official traffic fatality count.
